OPIS

Ernest Cole (1940-1990) przez większą część życia nie rozstawał się ze swoim aparatem. W jego rękach stał się on narzędziem pokazującym niewidzialnych, przywracającym godność i sprawczość. Cole był jednym z pierwszych niezależnych ciemnoskórych fotografów w RPA, współpracującym z magazynami „Drum” i „The New York Times”. Jego wczesne zdjęcia dokumentowały życie czarnej społeczności i brutalność apartheidu. Po ucieczce z RPA w 1966 władze zakazały mu powrotu. Na emigracji zajmował się fotografią uliczną, a w latach 1969-1971 współpracował z kolektywem „Tiofoto” w Szwecji. Po jego śmierci w sejfie szwedzkiego banku znaleziono 60 000 negatywów, co pozwoliło na nowo odkryć jego twórczość.

Raoul Peck (1953), haitański reżyser, scenarzysta i producent. Jego twórczość koncentruje się na kwestiach politycznych, społecznych i postkolonialnych. Studiował m.in. w Niemczech i USA. Międzynarodowe uznanie przyniósł mu dokument „Nie jestem twoim murzynem” (2016), nominowany do Oscara i oparty na niewydanej książce Jamesa Baldwina. Wśród jego ważnych dzieł znajdują się również film „Lumumba” (2000) i serial dokumentalny „Wytępić całe to bydło” (2021). Peck był także ministrem kultury Haiti oraz rektorem francuskiej szkoły filmowej La Fémis.

DESCRIPTION

Ernest Cole (1940–1990) rarely parted with his camera during his lifetime. In his hands, it became a tool for revealing the invisible ones and restoring dignity and agency. One of South Africa's first independent dark-skinned photographers, Cole worked with magazines such as Drum and The New York Times, among others. His early, harrowing photographs documented the lives of the black community and the brutality of apartheid. After fleeing South Africa in 1966, the authorities revoked his passport and banned him from ever returning to the country. While in exile, primarily in the United States, he pursued street photography and collaborated with the “Tiofoto” collective in Sweden from 1969 to 1971. Following his death, his 60,000 negatives, which were considered irretrievably lost, were discovered in a safe deposit box in a Swedish bank.

DIRECTOR

Raoul Peck (1953), Haitian director, writer and producer. His work focuses on political, social and post-colonial issues. He studied in Germany and the USA, among other countries. Peck gained international recognition with the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” (2016), nominated for an Oscar and based on an unreleased book by James Baldwin. His major works also include the films “Lumumba” (2000) and the documentary series “Exterminate All the Brutes” (2021). Peck has also served as Haiti's Minister of Culture and as president of the French film school La Fémis.
