I went to Borneo four times in the end, and each time I was hospitalised

immediately on my return.

The first time was in Brunei with the SAS, when I went down with heat

exhaustion. Suffering abject confusion, hallucinations and severe

dehydration, I was helicoptered to a coastal hospital, where the medic

connected an IV needle in my arm to a garden hose, told me where the tap was,

and went off for his weekend's leave. That should have been enough to put

me off the jungle for life.

But it wasn't. All it did was annoy me. So when, a year later, Chris Finch

Hatton, a friend recently returned from four years in Australia, declared

himself restless and bored, I knew I'd found a way to get my revenge."

Normally, when people decide that they're going to get out of the rat race

or jump off the career roundabout, they do something which is worthy or

understandable, such as dig wells in Africa or cycle round the world. Not

me. I was going to cross the island of Borneo, from coast to coast, just to

spite Her Majesty's Special Air Service. And CFH was going to come with me.

There was only one problem: the fauna half of the flora and fauna equation

described in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Apart from mosquitoes and leeches,

a selection of parasitic worms plus typhoid, dengue fever, rabies, hepatitis,

dysentery and malaria. .. there were snakes. On the ground there were

bears and tree snakes, the rivers contained leptospirosis and water snakes,

and in the air there were hornets and flying snakes.

I am not keen on snakes."
